Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, 600 mg/42.9 mg per 5 mL should be taken every 12 hours with a meal or snack to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal upset. If diarrhea develops and is severe or lasts more than 2 or 3 days, call your doctor. Diarrhea is a common problem caused by antibiotics which usually ends when the antibiotic is discontinued. Sometimes after starting treatment with antibiotics, patients can develop watery and bloody stools even as late as 2 or more months after having taken the last dose of the antibiotic.

Patients should be counseled that antibacterial drugs, including amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, should only be used to treat bacterial infections. They do not treat viral infections. When Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium 600 mg/42.9 mg per 5 mL is prescribed to treat a bacterial infection, patients should be told that although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may:
(1) Decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment, and
(2) Increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, or other antibacterial drugs in the future.

Keep suspension refrigerated. Shake well before using. When dosing a child with the suspension (liquid) of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, 600 mg/42.9 mg per 5 mL, use a dosing spoon or medicine dropper. Be sure to rinse the spoon or dropper after each use. Bottles of suspension of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, 600 mg/42.9 mg per 5 mL may contain more liquid than required. Follow your doctor's instructions about the amount to use and the days of treatment your child requires. Discard any unused medicine.

Views of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is also contraindicated in patients with a previous history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. While amoxicillin/clavulanate possesses the characteristic low toxicity of the penicillin group of antibiotics, periodic assessment of organ system functions, including renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function, is advisable if therapy is for longer than the drug is approved for administration. Prescribing amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension, in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium inhibits transpeptidase, preventing cross-linking of bacterial cell wall and leading to cell death. Addition of clavulanate increases drug's resistance to beta-lactamase. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillin. Amoxicillin fights bacteria in the body. Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium is a form of clavulanic acid, which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that are often resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Warnings of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium

Welcome To Plenus Pharmaceuticals (P) Ltd

Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium is a penicillin antibiotic and should not be used by patients with a history of penicillin allergy. There is a relatively low incidence of cross-allergy with beta-lactic and cephalosporin antibiotics, but amoxicillin or clavulanate should be used cautiously in patients with these allergies. Amoxicillin or clavulanate can produce false positive results in urine tests for glucose. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a combination medicine that is used for treating various types of infections in adults and children. It is an antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die. This drug is available by prescription and comes in several different forms, including chewable tablets, tablets, and a liquid. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets are generally well tolerated. The majority of side effects observed in clinical trials were of a mild and transient nature and less than 3% of patients discontinued therapy because of drug-related side effects. The most frequently reported adverse effects were diarrhea/loose stools (9%), nausea (3%), skin rashes and urticaria (3%), vomiting (1%) and vaginitis (1%). The overall incidence of side effects, and in particular diarrhea, increased with the higher recommended dose.

Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid, which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that are often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for tablets are contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any penicillin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. Amoxicillin/clavulanate is the drug of choice for children with acute otitis media as well as kids with treatment failures using amoxicillin alone. It is also the treatment of choice for patients with a perforated eardrum. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic with antibiotic activity against many microbes, but is very susceptible to inactivation by beta lactamases, and therefore ineffective against bacteria that produce these enzymes. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium should be taken at evenly spaced intervals as prescribed. It is important to take amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium regularly to get the most benefit.

Uses of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is approved for treating the above infections only when they are caused by certain types of bacteria. Bacteria have difference resistance patterns in different regions in the country. This means that some bacteria may be susceptible to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium in certain parts of the country but not in others. Overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. "Broad-spectrum" antibiotics should not be used to treat infections that could be treated by an antibiotic with a narrower spectrum of activity. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is usually considered a broad-spectrum antibiotic. The drug should not be used unless tests have shown that a particular infection is caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it or if there is reason to strongly suspect that the bacteria are susceptible to the medication.

FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is a semi synthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by ß-lactamases, and therefore, the spectrum of activity does not include organisms which produce these enzymes. Clavulanic acid is a ß-lactam, structurally related to the penicillin’s, which possesses the ability to inactivate a wide range of ß-lactamase enzymes commonly found in microorganisms resistant to penicillin’s and cephalosporin’s. It has good activity against the clinically important plasmid-mediated ß-lactamases frequently responsible for transferred drug resistance.
