Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid, which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that are often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for tablets are contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any penicillin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is approved for treating the above infections only when they are caused by certain types of bacteria. Bacteria have difference resistance patterns in different regions in the country. This means that some bacteria may be susceptible to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium in certain parts of the country but not in others. Overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. "Broad-spectrum" antibiotics should not be used to treat infections that could be treated by an antibiotic with a narrower spectrum of activity. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is usually considered a broad-spectrum antibiotic. The drug should not be used unless tests have shown that a particular infection is caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it or if there is reason to strongly suspect that the bacteria are susceptible to the medication.

FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is a semi synthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by ß-lactamases, and therefore, the spectrum of activity does not include organisms which produce these enzymes. Clavulanic acid is a ß-lactam, structurally related to the penicillin’s, which possesses the ability to inactivate a wide range of ß-lactamase enzymes commonly found in microorganisms resistant to penicillin’s and cephalosporin’s. It has good activity against the clinically important plasmid-mediated ß-lactamases frequently responsible for transferred drug resistance.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets are an oral antibacterial combination consisting of the semisynthetic antibiotic amoxicillin and the ß-lactamase inhibitor, clavulanate potassium (the potassium salt of clavulanic acid). Amoxicillin is an analog of ampicillin, derived from the basic penicillin nucleus, 6-aminopenicillanic acid. Amoxicillin and clavulanate is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin and clavulanate fights bacteria in the body. Amoxicillin and clavulanate is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate can make birth control pills less effective. Use a second non-hormone method of birth control  to prevent pregnancy while taking Amoxicillin and clavulanate. Amoxicillin and clavulanate will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Amoxicillin and clavulanate can pass into breast milk and may cause a yeast infection, diarrhea, or allergic reaction in a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. Amoxicillin and clavulanate should be taken at evenly spaced intervals as prescribed. It is important to take Amoxicillin and clavulanate regularly to get the most benefit. Amoxicillin diffuses readily into most body tissues and fluids with the exception of the brain and spinal fluid. The results of experiments involving the administration of clavulanic acid to animals suggest that this compound, like amoxicillin, is well distributed in body tissues.
